Description
In this cartoon dating 6/10/1932, Clifford Berryman portrayed the opposing platforms of the Republican and Democrat conventions on the issue of Prohibition. The Democrats supported a clear-cut repeal of the 18th Amendment, which was approved by a resounding majority of the delegates, 934-3/4 to 213-3/4. The Democratic stance was depicted as the donkey swimming in the wet trough. The Republicans chose a more ambiguous plank that was represented as a waterwagon driven by the Republican National Committee Chairman Simeon Fess. The Republican majority wanted to enforce prohibition and suggested a national referendum that would allow each state to decide if it wanted prohibition or not. But, as Berryman showed, the Republican elephant was tempted to jump into the wet trough. There was a minority Republican plank that advocated repeal of prohibition. The minority plank was defeated 690-19/36 to 460-2/9.
